We encourage nominations for excellent Printed Exhibition or Permanent Collection Catalogues by both affiliated and independent curators that offer new methodologies, consider the public’s understanding, and advance the field.
Printed Exhibition or Permanent Collection Catalogue nominations must have been published between January 1 and December 31, 2019 and written by curator(s) in the non-profit sector, including those working in traditional museum settings, as well as community based, public art, government, library, and academic organizations. Those in other fields and in for-profit settings cannot be nominated. All nominated individuals must be eligible for AAMC membership, please visit our website to review criteria for membership. The subject matter may cover any field and/or topic relevant to the curatorial field.
Each nominator or nominee must mail 3-5 print copies of the nominated publication to the jurors (one copy each). Addresses will be sent to nominators upon the submission of this form. It is the responsibility of the nominee or nominator to ensure copies are received in hand (not postmarked) NO LATER THAN Monday, December 2, 2019. Late arrivals will not be accepted.
Competitive Printed Exhibition or Permanent Collection Catalogue nominations should look to contain the following elements that are included within our vetting criteria:
- A clearly presented thesis that is well-researched, comprehensible, and respondent to issues of inclusivity within museums and arts organizations.
- Content that is curator-driven, i.e. researched, well-written, vetted, and perhaps peer-reviewed (the latter if applicable).
- References, comparative images, conservation information, etc.
- Connections/reflections to current social issues.
- Advances the understanding of the subject content in new and engaging ways for all audiences.
- New methodologies and innovative concepts, pushing the subject matter forward.
- Accessible, inclusive, and engaging design elements, including but not limited to quality images and reproductions, translated materials, and inclusive or universal design.
- All Printed Catalogue or Publications must have been published between January 1, 2019 and December 31, 2019.
- Nominations must be made by a current AAMC memberand can only be submitted through the online portal.
- Nominated curators must be eligible for membership and become a member should they be selected as an Awardee. If you have concerns about this, please contact the AAMC offices and visit our website to review criteria for membership. Only curators can receive the award.
- Self-nominations are encouraged and welcomed.
- A nominator may submit more than one nomination in one or many categories.
- Complete all fields in the online application and upload all required documents. An incomplete entry will NOT be accepted or reviewed.
Nominations for the 2020 Awards open on Monday, October 21, 2019 and the final deadline for nominations is 12pm NOON ET on Monday, December 2, 2019. Any late submissions and late material will result in the nomination not being reviewed by the jurors. If the sample of the publication is not delivered to the jurors on Monday, December 2, 2019 they will not be considered in the vetting process. There are no exceptions to this rule.
AAMC & AAMC Foundation support advancing inclusion and access throughout our entire organization, the curatorial field, and art community as a whole. Jurors are asked to consider work that encourages pushing boundaries with new approaches and perspectives in research, presentation, and access. We seek work that is within scholarly standards but that offers new methodologies, considers the public’s understanding, and advances the field. Importantly, we seek curatorial work that supports inclusion and access. It is the content and presentation of the nominations that is celebrated by these Awards.
Those selected for an Award are notified by AAMC & AAMC Foundation directly and will be asked to confirm attendance at the conference (which is not required, but encouraged), and exact listings for the Awards.
Awardees are confidential until they are announced at our conference during an Awards for Excellence reception on Sunday, May 3, 2020, in Seattle, Washington. Attendance at the conference is not required to receive an Award, but we do hope that Awardees will make every effort to participate.
